Saturday- Enfield State Park and Ross Creek State Forest Excursion

By Elspeth Swan & Paul Norquay

A highlight of the sunny Saturday afternoon SEANA excursion to Beacon Hill on Incolls Road in Enfield State Park was a display of Twisted Sun-orchids, Thelymitra flexuosa. The thirteen participants, after parking to enjoy the views towards Mt Warrenheip and Mt Buninyong, enjoyed exploring the hillside looking at the diverse flora of the site. The endemic Enfield Grevillea, Grevillea bedggoodiana, was amongst the many flowering species, as was Dwarf Boronia Boronia nana.

Our second stop, after a drive through the diverse vegetation types of Enfield State Park along Berringa-Misery Creek Road, was to another orchid hot-spot near the Berringa Historic Area. Two types of Greenhoods, Tiger Orchids, Caladenias and Showy Violets were a feature. The highlight for some keen observers was to see a thynnine wasp pollinating a Small Spider-orchid, for others it was seeing a Southern Water-skink. Eulamprus tympanum.
