Excursion 9: Lake Victoria and Lake Lorne

We met at Emily’s Pond on Emily Street, Point Lonsdale. As Emily Street is a ‘no through road’ we helped all drivers to turn around and park facing towards Fellows Rd.

We walked along Emily Street to Lake Victoria and followed the walking track to the last of the small ponds beside the golf course. We recorded 23 species of birds in eBird eBird Checklist – 28 Mar 2026 – Lake Victoria. We had close views of Red-necked Stints and Red-capped Plovers feeding. Much excitement was caused by the presence of a very large Lowland Copperhead beside the track. Hopefully someone has a photo that can be shared.

We then relocated to the Bellarine Rail Station in High Street, Drysdale. We did not travel in convoy but advised drivers of our destination and where to park. One driver parked on the other side of the lake and was a little late. We had a short walk to the bridge from where we were able to see 30 species of birds including Freckled Ducks. eBird Checklist – 28 Mar 2026 – Lake Lorne.

The participants enjoyed the contrast between the saline and freshwater lakes.
