Excursion 2: Port Phillip Bay boat cruise

Leader: Peter Crowcroft
Facilitator: Phil Watson

After starting the day in the dark with heavy rain one wondered at the merit of a boat trip. Nonetheless, 25 participants arrived on time and eager to sail as the weather had turned calm and clear. Before boarding the vessel, we walked the harbourside to watch the resident Stingrays cruise past.

Our Captain, Merv, and First mate, Frankie, took us through risks and requirements on the cruise and explained the route we would take and the possible sightings of interest. We boarded the vessel and had our first stop at Popes Eye and watched the hundreds of Australasian Gannets before moving to Chinaman’s Hat and seeing the antics of the Australian Fur Seals. A cruise passed Portsea and Point Nepean showed evidence of coastal environmental change and damage over the years of human intervention.

Out crew gave us a constant narration of the history and uniqueness of Port Phillip Bay and were able to show us amazing wildlife. This included close up Shy Albatross, White-faced Storm-Petrel, Little Penguin, Black-faced Cormorants and Crested Terns. On our return journey Bottle-nosed Dolphins escorted us part way to Queenscliff.

A fantastic, clear and dry sailing trip.

Thank you to Merv and Frankie.
