On Sunday afternoon our group of 13 met at the start of the Dementia Friendly Forest and Sensory trail in the Woowookarung Regional Park. Jeff Rootes from the Friends of Canadian Corridor (FoCC) explained how the Friends had worked hard to gain funding to create this world-first dementia sensory trail, to inclusively showcase this very attractive part of the forest. We strolled along the wide, wheelchair-friendly trail as it meandered through the Heathy Dry Forest dominated by Stringybarks and Peppermints. Grass-trees were widespread. Fortunately for the group, our visit coincided with the joint FoCC and FNCB Annual Wildflower Walk, with pictorial and explanatory cards posted next to examples of the local wildflowers. Although the dry winter had decreased the wildflowers on display, our visitors were surprised at the variety of flowers in bloom. A highlight was the newly- discovered colony of Common Bird-orchids in flower near the start of the trail.
